The New York Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx 3 games to 2 to win the 2024 WNBA title, in the best WNBA Finals in history. The Liberty won Game 5, 67-62 in overtime in Brooklyn Sunday night.
It is the first WNBA championship for one of the league’s original members, denying the Lynx a record-fifth title. Jonquel Jones won Finals MVP, averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds in the series.
The series, which featured three UConn alums, saw multiple overtime games, a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds of Game 3, and an overtime decisive fifth game.
In Game 5, the Liberty’s stars, Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu severely struggled shooting the basketball. They were a combined 5-of-34 from the field.
Minnesota had a two-point lead with ten seconds left. In an awkward hot mic moment, Liberty coach Sandy Brondello could be heard on the ESPN telecast telling Stewart to embellish contact for a foul call. She did exactly that in a controversial foul call. Stewart, one of the game’s all-time greats, struggled at the line during the series, but made both, sending it to overtime.
Napheesa Collier, who was outstanding all postseason, led the Lynx with 22 points in the finale.
It was the most watched and most entertaining season in league history, and had the most exciting Finals in league history.
