Earlier this week, the TD Garden’s social media team – almost certainly acting under the direct orders of Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck – shared the map you see above. While some may incorrectly interpret this post as a teaser for the recently announced Megan Moroney concert, true sports fans know better. This isn’t just a map. This is a declaration. A statement on Boston sports fandom. A green-and-white line in the sand drawn in digital pink.
Which brings us to the only logical question anyone should be asking right now: Do the Boston Celtics hate Hamden?
Now, we can’t say for certain. But one thing’s clear – maps are never wrong and especially not the ones that are shared on social media. And this map tells a clear story: Western Mass defected (likely during the 1986-2008 title drought), upstate New York dutifully bleeds Celtic green, and “860” Connecticut has long been the heart of Celtics Nation.
And yet… Hamden is missing. Deliberately missing. You don’t go through the trouble of posting a 50-by-100 foot map 80 feet off the ground on social media unless you are absolutely sure of what you’re saying. And what they’re saying is simple. Hamden doesn’t count.
To get to the bottom of this, we reached out to the Celtics for comment:
At the time of publication, the team has yet to respond – which, if you ask me, says everything.
